Antique Bronze Pestle and Mortar
Qty |
Purchased from a retired Antique Dealer this Pestle and Mortar is solid Bronze!
Heavy bronze mortars were being made as early as the 12th century - one of the earliest kitchen tools apparently. Typically, Mortars from the 16th and 17th Century were often decorated with intricate or geometric designs and were used to grind spices, herbs, grains as well as medicines, soaps and perfumes.
By the 17th Century they were being made in glazed porcelain so they were easier to clean - these were introduced by Josiah Wedgewood.
This is of plain design - no frills here. There is real age to this piece and to be honest it could well be many Centuries old, possibly even pre 16th Century.
It is extremely heavy and extremely good quality. A stunning piece that will only become more collectable over the course of time and a very tactile link to the past.
