A Stunning piece with real character and age.
The terms Moors and Moorish basically mean Arab or Muslim, the period the Moos ruled in Spain was from the 8th to the 15th Century. After that it was reconquered by the Spanish who converted most of the Mosques into Churches. - therefore it is highly likely that the table originates from this period.
The basic Shahada, or testimony in Islam is 'There are no Gods but God', which is what we believe the inscription to say.
It is ebonised with turned supports and a wrought iron scroll stretcher.
Around the edge is inlaid with Bone and parquetry in an aesthetically pleasing geometric design, towards the inside there is fruitwood inlay and then a border of Mother of Pearl and fruitwood geometrically shaped flowers. There is a panel in bone on each side in the centre with the most beautiful Arabic script inlaid in Ebony.
If only it could talk, I would love to hear the stories it could tell.
There is no hiding the fact that it has some condition issues with the veneer but structurally it is sound and in my opinion is still extremely beautiful, it doesn't take anything away from the 'look' and the workmanship.
