Arts & Crafts Oak, Medullery Ray Extending Table with six chairs, in the manner of Liberty & Co(Ref: 600)
An absolutely stunning Dining room table and six chairs in Oak with a Medullery Ray pattern.
Quintessentially Arts & Crafts, probably Scottish, in the manner and quality of Liberty & Co Circa 1900
The chairs bear the stamp 'Rd No 687055' and a secondary stamp of 3105
There are no makers marks on the table as far as we can see.
The table has 4 chunky tapered legs of square column form, they rest on brass castors. It extends from a round 4 seater to an Oval 6 seater. 1 of the six chairs is a carver.
The table top is Medullery Ray Oak and is simply beautiful.
As you can see it extends by way of a winder and the corkscrew patent of Joseph Fitter, Cheapside Birmingham. Fitter made mechanisms for the top quality retailers of the time including Heal & Co of London.
This table is incredibly well made and heavy, the mechanism works like it was made yesterday and it all fits together perfectly. The table, the legs and the chairs show signs of wear and tear as you would expect. But it seems slightly sacrilegious to completely wipe out all of that history. It has been very lovingly but lightly restored.
This table would be a stunning addition to any home interior and is a real sign of quality. And in true Liberty & Co, Arts & Crafts style, there isn't another one like it!
