Original Painting titled 'Gulls' by Lillian Medland c.1930
(Ref: 353)Lillian Medland - 'Gulls'
I cannot put into words how luminescent this painting is, how fine the detail is and quite how beautiful it is. It literally drew me in and mesmerised me. It is of course Lapwings but is simply titled 'Gulls'.
I feel that Lillian Medland is a very overlooked female artist, one that should be rediscovered, appreciated and collected.
There is some dirt on the surface of this painting and some slight discolouration in places (at the edges mainly). Of course it could be removed from the frame and cleaned if this is felt necessary. I prefer to leave it as found with evidence of the years passed.
The Frame is wood, plaster and gilt. It is signed to the bottom left hand corner.
Lillian Marguerite Medland was a Nurse and an illustrator of books. She produced paintings to illustrate Gregory Mathew's books on Australian birds. She also illustrated the plates for her husbands, Tom Iredale, book Birds of Paradise and Bower Birds and Birds of New Guinea
