A stunning little Antique bronze and Ormolu Candlestick, missing most of its 'Ormolu'.
Very much in the style of the early 19th Century with its flora and fauna design. Traces of gilt bronze to the stem, more so to the base.
This was purchased from the Estate of Wormington Grange in Gloucestershire, former home of General Hastings Ismay, otherwise know as "Pug". 1st Baron Ismay KG, GCB, CH, DSO, PC, DL, was a British Indian Army officer and diplomat, remembered primarily for his role as Winston Churchill's chief military assistant during the Second World War and his service as the first Secretary General of NATO from 1952 to 1957
(Ormolu is the gilding technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam to an object of bronze, and for objects finished in this way. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. The French refer to this technique as "bronze doré"; in English, it is known as "gilt bronze")
