An iconic piece of mid-century design by Robin Day for Hille. Designed and produced in the 1950's and still so desirable today.
The walnut slats are incredibly strong and hard wearing, they of course show some patina which belies their age but this not take away from the 'look' or the functionality of the piece.
Robin Day was one of the most significant British furniture designers of the 20th Century. He had a long and successful career and was an accomplished industrial and interior designer.
The slatted bench was designed for Hille and first launched at the Milan Triennale in 1954. In addition to serving as a bench or low table, this multifunctional design was conceived to work as a modular, flexible base for Day's storage cabinets from the interplan range. Day was concerned with issues of functionality in the modern home, observing "what one needs in today's small rooms is to see over and under one's furniture".
