Wainscot style chair c.1890
A dark oak Wainscot style chair circa 1890, with a carved depiction of the Abduction of the Sabine Women - sometimes referred to as 'the rape of the Sabine women'. Although it should be stated that the Latin word for 'abduction' is 'rapito' which is probably where the mis titled 'rape of the Sabine women' comes from.
A story from Ancient Rome when Romulus was at the helm, Rome was new and very male dominated so at risk of demise. Offers of marriage were not recieved well and so Romulus invited neighbouring villages/towns to attend games - this is where the women from nearby Sabina were abducted as future brides for the Roman men.
This chair was given by an Antique dealer to his daughter and her new husband around 50 years ago as a wedding gift (he obviously had a unique sense of humour....).
It is in lovely condition, there is a little bit of play in the joints but lovely nonetheless.
